Older News - January to March 1998

Monday, March 30 -

The upload script was down for about 45 minutes today while I was searching for where I missed a ; while updating it. The upload script now produces an HTML logfile that is much easier to use to find files by game or to check what's new. I personally will be doing less updating of scripts and the encyclopedia because my computer isn't operating. I'll pick back up when it is working again. (Ross Bemrose)

If you have submitted files in the past (since late January) and do not see them on the site, neither officially added nor in the new-files directory, I would appreciate if you could resubmit them with the upload script. This would help save me lots of time. (Mike Newman)

Friday, March 27 -

The website was down from approximately 1pm to 6pm due to a routine cleaning of the Neurogamer (our host's) server. No VGMusic.com files were affected. (Mike Newman)

Wednesday, March 25 -

The upload script is now in place. All files uploaded using it appear in the new-files directory. (Ross Bemrose)

Because the new upload script can provide useful info, I am resubmitting all the files I had originally put in the new-files directory by ftp with the script instead. Please be patient while it takes me a while to fill out 100 forms. (Mike Newman)

The Wishlist is back! Post your wishes for new files on the new Wishlist Message Board.

Sunday, March 22 -

I've uploaded most of the new files I had sitting in my mailbox to the new-files directory. Enjoy!

Also, I figured out how to make the MIDI Trackname Analyzer open any midi file from any URL address!! (Mike Newman)

Tuesday, March 17 -

We have decided to now post files that we haven't officially added to the archive in a public directory called new-files. This way, new songs can be available right away without the slow down that usually occurs.

I'm finally on Spring Break, so I'll be off from school for a week. The only problem is that I'm stuck at home with my 486 instead of being on campus with my Pentium 233, so please bare with me. Hopefully I can get the hit counter and other things fixed ASAP. (Mike Newman)

Special thanks to GuanabaraJ, the webmaster of Frappe (http://frappe.simplenet.com) for sending in a practically complete list of all NES games ever made (including release data and company) which was made by Geoff Rainville.

Our page can now be reached by using our domain name!!!! Please bookmark the page from http://www.vgmusic.com/. After we do some updating this weekend, some of our CGI scripts will not work correctly from the old neurogamer address.

Can you spare a dollar? We have a new Donations page. This site will always remain free, but we would appreciate your support for all the hours that have been put into the upkeep of this site.

A CGI break through! Try out our MIDI Track Name Analyzer. The first CGI script ever to open up a MIDI file and list the track names. This script is very new and there are a few bugs that we are working on to fix. Let us know what you think about it! This script was made by me (Michael Newman). Special thanks go to Mike Zaimont for sending me some essential documents about the MIDI file format.

Because the Mightyfox server will be down for a couple weeks and our own vgmusic.com server hosted by TierraNet is too expensive, we looked for an alternative place to host our site. Golbez, a loyal patron and the webmaster of Golbez's Fortress, suggested http://www.neurogamer.com/ to me. So I applied for the site to be an affliate and we were accepted the same day! This will be the best server for this site ever. We even will have our domain name moved here as soon as possible. In the mean time, we are rushing to reassemble the site back on this server. Please be patient. We appreciate your loyalty!! If perchance you think this site has been moving around too much lately, check out our Milestones page to see how many times we have moved since our inception!
