Older News - October to December 1998

Wednesday, December 30

Just a reminder, for all your gaming news, give Gaming Intelligence Agency (GIA) a try. (Powerlord)

Monday, December 28

Bad news I'm afraid... 2 of our sister sites are now down on a semi-permanent basis. Tiamat.net had their Simplenet account closed because of multiple violations, Andy's Web Site (Bahamut's Domain) closed his site because of Simplenet continuously shutting down his site. On the other hand, Heaven's Cloud switched servers and hasn't completed redesigning the site yet.

In other sister site news, RPGStuff has a new look. (Powerlord)

Sunday, December 27

VGMusic now has over 6,000 songs online! Also, special thanks to Peach for doing the largest update ever! (Mike Newman)

Saturday, December 19

Today is the second anniversary of the Videogame Music Archive! Too bad Clinton had to be impeached today. Otherwise, we would have been the top story of every news organization. Oh well. (Just kidding.) Special thanks to the VGMusic staff for all their help in continuing to make the site better than I ever imagined it could ever be back in December 1996. Also, special thanks to all VGMusic patrons for making this such a popular site. And lastly, thank you to Telefragged.com for hosting our site.

I also changed the PC Music page today so it would be much easier to update. I then went through and put up almost all the PC music files that were sitting around in the new-files directory. I neglected to mention the specific files in the Recent Updates below though.

Also, try out our whiteboard to draw and chat with other people. I'm testing it out right now as I write this sentence... (Mike Newman)

Thursday, December 17

Donald Griffin contacted me today to let me know that the song "onejump.mid" does not appear in the game Aladdin (for Genesis). I deleted it ASAP. Why did I rush? Because Donald made 5 original compositions and 5 arrangements for the game! Check out his website for more of his credits and also to learn about his computer music consulting business.

You might have noticed that a lot of PC music is piling up in the new-files directory. If you are interested in handling the PC music section and files, please let me know. We definitely need the help. A prerequisite is that you have a good knowledge of PC games (something of which I do not have). I'm also interested in finding someone to handle the Japanese collection midis (which are also piling up). (Mike Newman)

Wednesday, December 16

Hmmm... Looks like none of us decided to post any news recently.

The Game Music Quiz has been shut down. We are still deciding what to do with it.

Tis the season to be busy.... School projects and exams have been taking up most of our time recently, leaving us little time to do updates. Hopefully things will return to normal after the 1st of the year.

Don't forget to check new-files for files that have recently come in. Zelda 64 midis have been showing up there recently. (Powerlord)

Monday, November 30

Quiz #6 is up, go play it now! Game Music Quiz (Necrosaro)

Saturday, November 28

MILESTONE: We hit 400,000 hits on the counter today! We're now entering the final stretch to one-half million visitors! I just happened to wake up at 3am EST and check the counter. (Powerlord)

Tuesday, November 17

Stephen Kennedy, of KFSS Studios, has been working on making three CDs of Squaresoft music: one Symphonic, one Rock/Techno, and one relaxation or meditative CD. The music will be in regular CD audio format, so your regular old CD-player can play it. Square is currently reviewing the project for licensing and copyrighting (I hope everything works out!). To learn more about the project, visit ZodiacBrave. Also, contact Stephen Kennedy if you wish to be put on the mailing list for the news about this project. (Mike Newman)

Tuesday, November 10

SSTrax is finally opening it's doors on vgmusic.com. SSTrax is our ONLY hosted site, a module tracking group based on IRC. This is the premiere Squaresoft tracking group on the web, with members such as TSSF (he has a lot of works on RPGamer). (Powerlord)

Thursday, November 5

I got a rather serious silly message over ICQ the other day:
Its confirmed, Mirabilis is going to charge $469 for every time you use your microwave. If you want to see your dog again, click FORWARD and send this to everyone on your list. We know if you have done this, because we can telepathically watch you all the time and we even know when you take a cr*p. If the number of people you forward this to equals the number of Ectasy addicts in Bulgaria, You will not have to pay for using your microwave. (Powerlord)

Wildkard (Adrian Myer) is now the new official Encyclopedia Page Editor. He will be replacing Powerlord, who has changed to the new position of CGI Editor and Security Expert. Check out the Encyclopedia page which has been finally updated after months of inactivity. (Mike Newman)

Tuesday, November 3

People have been asking "What happened to Peach?" a lot lately. Peach had a computer crash earlier this week. She will be back as soon as possible.

In other news, Andrew Vestal (Of square.net fame), has launched another website. Nicknamed G.I.A., it stands for Gaming Intelligence Agency. There isn't much there now, as this site is brand new, and the layout is not even finished. (Powerlord)

Sunday, November 1

Quiz #2 is up, go play it now! Game Music Quiz (Necrosaro)

GET access was given back to 12.5.246.* and 12.5.247.* last night. Users from this address can not post to the message boards at this point, but can read any document/play an midi on the site. (Powerlord)

Saturday, October 31

Thanks to Pong64's sharp eyes, I found out that Elimanator's ISP has more than one block of addresses. 12.5.246.* and 12.5.247.* are now banned. Oh, I also misreported the number of messages. The number of messages was 30+, not 50+. (Powerlord)

Wednesday, October 28

I had to ban my first block of IPs today. Someone by the name of Elimanator harrassed Peach, then spammed the message board with upwards of 50 messages. We do not tolerate this kind of behaviour here at vgmusic.com. Some of you may know Elimanator from our chatroom. He is now banned from there, as well. (Powerlord)

Monday, October 26

The Videogame Music Archive now has over 5,000 songs online! Special thanks to the VGMusic staff for doing numerous updates and thanks to everyone for making and sending in midis!! (Mike Newman)

Friday, October 23

The Heretic 2 Demo has been released. I have been working in conjunction with the Raven Archives, another Telefragged site, to bring the largest download mirror list so far in the world. You can get the demo via the Web/Directory list or the Direct Download list. (Powerlord)

I will be starting the first real quiz this Sunday in the afternoon, now that the quiz page has been tested and the score boards work. The quiz will be updated every Sunday after that. See the Game Music Quiz page for more details. (Necrosaro)

Monday, October 19

According to the Associated Press: "A federal judge temporarily banned production of a hand-held device that can download and play pirated computer music files." This device is a portable MP3 player, which is an awesome idea. Its unfair how they assume that all MP3 files are illegal! Click here to see the article on CNN's website. (Mike Newman)

Tuesday, October 13

We are now hiring for a new person to keep up the Videogame Encyclopedia. If you are interested, please send a message to Mike Newman. A short description is available.

After a few bad starts, I finally got all the score files for the Game Music Quiz up and running properly. This time, the score files erasure was purely accidental (Somehow I managed to write a blank file when the script sorted entries). Good thing this happened this week, before the real 1st round starts. (Powerlord)

Sunday, October 11

I officially announce VGMusic's Java-Applets-for-Midis Initiative. There is a big opportunity now to design Java applets, so why not make java applets related to midis? If you are interested in making such applets, please contact me. I eventually hope to put up a webpage on VGMusic with java applets related to midis. It would be great to have java applets that can edit midis, or convert midi files into musical staffs (that was my hope when I started working on the CGI program "midi-ditti"). Side note: VGMusic will still keep its policy of no-java-applets on most pages, since the load time for such applets slows down the pages' loading times. I support have java-applets on pages by themselves though. (Mike Newman)

Saturday, October 10

The Game Music Quiz script is now complete. Week 0 is currently being used to make sure we have everything setup correctly. The index in the quiz directory is not yet set up the way we want it, but we will work on that in a bit. (Powerlord)

Wednesday, October 7

The location of the Chat applet on dal.net had changed.... I've updated the chat page to correct this (in other words, it works again). (Powerlord)

Tuesday, October 6

It seems that I was wrong about King Melvyl's site closing down permanently.... It was only down temporarily. It's back up now. (Powerlord)

Monday, October 5

There have been a lot of changes in the sister site links up top. There is a new sister site, and RPGStuff and King Melvyl's Castle have both gone down, perhaps permanently, perhaps not. (Powerlord)
