BIGmog.com down, but not necessarily gone

BIGmog.com down, but not necessarily gone

I finished mirroring the BIGmog.com files (except the mp3 and video downloads pages) and put them up here.

A quick note, the Forums link (yes, Forums, not Phorums like on the original site) links to the BIGmog board on our own forums.

Weird Index

Weird Index

There was a problem earlier today where I uploaded a file to the wrong directory. It was used as the default index for our main directory (since it was named index.php3), causing this page to not be displayed. It has since been fixed.

Not Goodbye... Nobuo Uematsu, Good Bye... BIGmog, Popup Ads

Not Goodbye... Nobuo Uematsu

I've seen various sites reporting that Nobuo Uematsu died. Rumors of Nobuo Uematsu's death have been greatly exaggerated. It was a hoax. Get over it!

Good Bye... BIGmog

BIGmog is closing up shop. To quote it's main page:

Final Update. Well I was hoping this day would never come. Sadly, the day that I would close BIGmog.com has come. It really didn't come as much of a surprise. I myself have witnessed multiple sites suffer the same fate. A shame really. A shame that people are losing not only money, but the pride of what they love to do. I've enjoyed doing BIGmog.com these past two years. So much in fact that I did it all out of my own pocket and never made a single dime back. I've enjoyed sharing music and videos for anyone willing to download them. I've enjoyed learning the many technical aspects of running a web site. But most of all I've enjoyed meeting new people thru email, chat, and the phorums. A list of people far too long to list but I feel I should try anyway.

First, my good friend Fox for letting me steal his idea. Wheezebucket for all the extras he contributed. Powerlord and the former VGMSS members for giving me a chance. Aragtago, Blazehedgehog, DeKaR, Johno, Kain, Kismet, Prettz, Rekka, and Wonka for keeping the #bigmog channel safe. Beezel, Crotchety, cyrax777, DarkFant, DavetheCamel, Dratini, Fu Shigi, Malkuth, Roland, Smethers, Tengu-Man, WussyBoy, Veecher, Vibes and all the other phorum inhabitants. Plus all the people that made a request, sent me an email, listened to BIGmog Radio, linked to me, or just found a new favorite song. You all made this site possible and I thank each and every one of you. I honestly feel that I've had a dream come true.

On that note I encourage everyone to pursue their goals. Whether it be making a video game, composing a song, or finding a girlfriend. You're in charge of your own life so don't blow it.

As for me I'll be around. BIGmog Radio will continue to broadcast and the #bigmog chat channel may be around for a bit longer. I'm sure that BIGmog.com will be back someday, somehow in some form. When that time comes I look forward to the same good times. Until we meet again I remain, BIGmog

Sayonara, BIGmog...

Popup Ads

Yes, we know about the popup ads. I saw the comments about them shortly after I got home from college last night. I was told that they are a necessary evil, and that Telefragged isn't making enough to pay it's bills without them.

That means that this time, unlike the last time popups appeared, they are here to stay.

Lots of stuff, New-Files changes, Upload Changes, Forums Changes

Lots of stuff

Since I haven't been updating the news (I do that sometimes), I'm reporting everything from the last month here now. For example, Yesterday was Sonic the Hedgehog's 10th Anniversary. In fact, I have this cool Music CD from preordering the Sonic Adventure 2 game. I compiled a tracklist and sent it to CDDB, but for some reason it must have rejected my list. 2 days later someone elses list was up on CDDB. Go figure. (My tracklist has more descriptive names, as it contained game names as well as track names. I'm sorry, "Title Music" is not a good track name when the CD has music from 8 games).

new-files Changes

The new-files script has been rewritten some. You may not care about that, but I'm sure our webhost does. In addition to the rewrite, i also had it wrap the buttons for sections at every 8 buttons, as well as center those buttons.

Upload Changes

On a related subject, the upload rules have been revised. It was such a big revision in fact, that we changed the file name of the upload form, so that everyone would have to agree to the new rules before uploading.

Forums Changes

Our forums have been upgraded to the php version of WWWThreads 5.4. The largest change is the addition of the Control Panel, which replaces Send Private Messages, Read Private Messages, and Edit Profile. In addition, it also has areas for marking your favorite forums and threads.

Happy Mother's Day everyone, Forums Outage, Store updated, Music Usage

Happy Mother's Day everyone

Happy Mothers Day! Give your mom something nice today.

Forums Outage

As I write this, the forums.vgmusic.com (middleearth.telefragged.com) webserver is out. I'm not sure how long it will be gone.
UPDATE: Apparently this is something on my ISPs side, as everyone else I've talked to has no problems with it.

Store Updated

The VGMusic Store was updated with more items on Animenation. I'm not finished updating it, I only got through J in the series list.

Music Usage

A lot of people have been asking me if they can use the music from this site. To quote our site's policy on this matter

All music files on this site, including those within zip files, are copyrighted by their respective authors. If you wish to use some of the music files you find on this site in a project, on another website, or for some other purpose, you should contact the author of the files you wish to use. For most files, this is listed in our archive in the information text file for each file. Please do not link directly to the music files on this site, but instead to the main page.

Please note, that is the official site policy regarding usage of the music on this site.

Hopefully, within the next week or two, we'll have a new system in place for Sequencers to sign up so their contact information will all be in one place.

We don't update news very often, Sistersites

We don't update news very often

A few things have happened since the last report... Forums upgraded and switched to the PHP version of WWWThreads... the link to BIGmog Radio up top (there, does that satisfy everyone's requests for a Radio?) In case you didn't know, BIGmog is one of the few remaining sistersites we have.

Sistersites

On the subject of sistersites, as you may have known, Braxus and I are the current maintainers of the Video Game Music Sister Sites main page. Since the page is a complete disaster, and the sistersites are almost all gone, I'm preparing to shut down the Sistersites Main Page. This can also be seen as the official breakup of the Video Game Music Sister Sites.

I've put direct links to the remaining sites on the VGMusic main page.

Another year... Another fool

Another year... Another fool

Ah, the fun things one can do with Internet Explorer 5.5+. For those that were not able to experience VGMusic.com's feature 2001 April Fool's joke, take a look at this screen capture (134KB). Seems to have quite a bit of feedback, as only about one out of every three visitors to VGMusic was able to see the flipped site, causing more confusion. From the looks of it, no one ever figured out how it was done. Well hidden by yours truly (I hope). wink wink!!! ;) Hopefully I'll be able to think of something more interesting for visitors come next year!

The other postings were probably a little more obvious. Kalrac's Redbeard character with the obsessive compulsion for math and Powerlord's babble about setting your clocks two hours ahead.

So what was the best April Fool's joke I've seen this year? Probably the one done by the crazy folks (pun intended) over at Blizzard. Got to love the screen shot from the upcoming Diablo II expansion pack, Diablo II: Lord of Destruction. Check out the screen capture here and then the MP3 that accompanies it.

Problems with main page, Reminder, and Notice

Problems with main page

I've had reports that the page looked odd in IE 5.5. I'll have to look into it tomorrow, as I'm being forced offline because my brother wants to use the net (thank goodness cable installers are coming Tuesday).

Reminder

Remember everyone, this year we're making up for lost time. Set your clock ahead TWO hours. You'll thank me for it when you get to work tomorrow.

Notice

The first bits of my rework of the FAQ are up. I hope you like them. They're a work-in-progress, but I figured I'd better show you all where I'm heading so you can give me feedback on tips on them.

Greetings and Sad News

Greetings and Sad News

This was supposed to be my introduction. I was supposed to announce that I was going to be new assistant to Kalrac, helping out with the FAQ and forum administration. Unfortunately, fate decided to change all that.

Last night, quite unexpectedly, she fell victim to an infected foot abcess. That makes me her full replacement. I'm still in shock over all this. I worked with her in the real world and I didn't expect something like this to happen. I'm going to do my best to pull myself together and do as good of a job being her replacement as I can. It's what she'd want. I don't know much about videogame music, so expect a few minor changes with the FAQ in the days to come.

So much for Spring Break.
