<Powerlord> It's probably something stupid and inane..

Posted by Powerlord on 06/26/04 05:17 AM

...is what I said earlier when VGMusic's server was rebooted and didn't come back up. Turns out, I was right.

During a routine reboot earlier (the first since February), the system went down and didn't come back up.

After some back and forth Trouble Ticket tag with EV1Servers, I found out that the machine was running, but the Ethernet interface wasn't coming up.

EV1Servers asked me if I wanted them to attach a remote terminal to the machine so I could look into the problem. They did, and after a few minutes of poking around, I found that the Operating System's hardware detection routines simply forgot about the ethernet card.

I added the ethernet card driver to the list of modules to load manually. The server now complains because it tries to load the ethernet card driver twice. It seems that, now that I told it to load the card manually, it remembers that the card is there. Computers...

As a side note, this is the first time that it's ever forgotten about hardware.

Away for a while

Posted by Powerlord on 05/21/04 07:36 AM

As some of you may already know, my cable internet access is scheduled to be disconnected today, May 21st, for reasons that are complicated and I'd rather not get into. As I have no modem in this computer, my internet access will be severly restricted.

What this means to you as an end user:
1. My work on ongoing projects and server software upgrades will be suspended for the time being.
2. The remainder of my duties will be handled by the sites other staff.
3. Questions and Comments about the website should be sent to the webmaster address. In fact, they should always be sent to the webmaster address anyway, so stop sending them to my personal address!

With any luck, VGMusic's server machine will continue to run smoothly during my absence. Powerlord knocks on wood.

Reminder: Giveaway VI entries are being accepted until 11:59pm EDT May 31st.

It has come to my attention that the virus W32.Sober.F@mm has, at some point, been using webmaster@vgmusic.com as its outgoing address.

You will never receive mail from webmaster@vgmusic.com. Any email from VGMusic's staff will be from one of the email addresses listed at the bottom of the main page.

Automated email may also be sent by the forums or contests scripts.

With the Final Fantasy: Dear Friends concert just one week away, I got to wondering exactly how many of VGMusic's regular visitors are going.

If you're going to the concert, make a reply here, and maybe even plan on meeting up in LA with some of the other people who are going!

PSA: VGDC Casino Installer

Posted by Powerlord on 04/21/04 10:18 PM

This is a public service announcement.

It is advised that Internet Explorer users avoid the Video Game Director's Cuts website until further notice. This is due to the addition of an obnoxious and intrusive Casino ActiveX installer to the site's main page.

Unfortunately, due to the Flash nature of the site, adding it to IE's Restricted Sites Zone disables site navigation.

Other browsers do not seem to be affected.

This has been a public service announcement.

An interesting April Fool's day

Posted by Powerlord on 04/02/04 12:07 AM

This year, we concentrated mainly on the forums for our April Fools gags.

First things first, was the return of the UBB.threads board. I bet no one was expecting that. :D Of course, as soon as you tried to read a post or sign up as a new user, you got booted over to the phpBB2 board.

This years real forum gag was us playing around with some users titles and with the word censor filter... We had lots of fun with it, and were changing various words throughout the day (in the last 7 minutes before we changed them back, we changed everything to the word SPAM).

Someone complained about the main page not changing at all, so... I added Sivak Drac's Diamonds game in the place on the main logo. I later had to take it down, as we'd done over twice our normal bandwidth for the day. Oops.

Anyway, the comments section will most likely contain the lists of words we changed, and we're going to keep some of the sillier posts around on a new board. Look for it on the forum index.

April Fools from the VGMusic.com Staff.
