You may remember me 8403" target="_blank" class="postlink">mentioning in October that the Rareware Music team was accepting questions that they would later answer.

On December 23rd, the answers to our questions were posted.

Happy 8th Birthday, VGMusic!

Posted by Powerlord on 12/19/04 03:20 AM

It's that time of year again!

VGMusic was started by Mike Newman on Geocities 8 years ago today. I bet he didn't expect this site to grow to the size it has when he started this site.

18000 files... 10000 unique visitors every day... 15GB of bandwidth daily...

It's amazing how time flies...

More VGMusic History is available for your perusal.

Attachments update

Posted by Powerlord on 12/15/04 07:56 PM

Attachments should be working on the forums again now.

All attachments made from sometime on Sunday, December 12, 2004 through the morning of Wednesday, December 15th, 2004 are gone.

I ran the "Shadow" Attachment removal tool, which should have cleaned up all the links to attachments that no longer exist. However, it did not fix the paperclip icon. It still shows up next to threads that had attachments even if they're gone.

If your attachment is missing, please edit your post to add it again.

American Final Fantasy Concert Tour

Posted by Powerlord on 12/14/04 11:18 PM

Following the success of the concert in Los Angeles earlier this year, Square Enix decided that an American tour was in order.

The first stop in the concert is Chicago, IL's Rosemont Theater on Saturday, February 19, 2005. Tickets are available from Ticketmaster's website, by phone at 312-559-1212, or by visiting the Rosemont's box office.

Further concert dates, times, and locations are not known at this time. We will attempt to keep you informed.

Added 2004-12-15: I somehow omitted some details earlier:

The concert is two hours long, will be played by the Chicagoland Pops and their Grammy award winning director, Arnie Roth.

VIP tickets include a meet & greet session with Uematsu.

500 Internal Server Errors

Posted by Powerlord on 12/14/04 01:52 AM

Some of you might have been seeing 500 Internal Server errors around the site during the past day or two. This was due to a new security measure that I implemented, which seemed to be misdetecting some normal requests as security breaches.

It has been removed for the time being.

Fixing a location

Posted by Powerlord on 12/10/04 09:10 PM

When the NEC PC-98 section was added to the site, I created it in the console directory heirarchy. Unfortunately, PC-98 is not a console architecture. It has now been moved to the computers section, and all links to it have been fixed.

Redirects will be in place for a few weeks.

Things to know before buying a Nintendo DS

Posted by Powerlord on 11/22/04 07:01 PM

There have been a number of things that people who are thinking about buying a DS need to know.

  • The DS can play GBA games, but not GB/GBC games.
  • The DS can not play multiplayer GBA games... there's no port to plug in a GBA link cable.
  • When you buy a DS, try it out before you leave the store. In particular, look for any dead pixels on the two screens. If you see one, exchange it for a different DS.
  • The battery only has a partial charge. You'll need to recharge it before any serious usage.

This will remain on the front page for a few days, then be moved to the General Message Board.

A Death Knell for Nullsoft

Posted by Powerlord on 11/11/04 02:15 PM

According to an article on The Register, Nullsoft lost the last of its original staff members this week. Only a few people remain at the company, and it is speculated that that there will be no further improvements to their software products.

Which software products, you ask? Why, the Winamp media player and the Shoutcast streaming radio server, of course.

Old software never really dies, though. I suspect that everyone who uses Winamp will continue to use it for the foreseeable future.

Sad day, sad day...

Posted by Willow on 10/30/04 09:11 PM

Nobuo Uematsu has reportedly retired from Square Enix.

Notably, this does not mean that he has died or that he has sworn off working for Square Enix ever again.

More details are available on RPGamer's site.

Thank you MSN!

Posted by Powerlord on 10/10/04 01:57 AM

Earlier tonight, my test server got hit by MSN's Search Bot. Unsurprisingly, this caused all sorts of problems, as this server is not currently ready for public consumption. It also reiterated to me how said code isn't ready to go live.

It not only brought the server to an extremely high load level (42, when it should be no more than 1 per processor), but unbeknownst to me, also caused a number of database connections that should have closed, to instead stay open.

Things should be fixed now, though.

As a side note, vgmusic.net and vgmusic.org point to the correct location again.
