The E3 2012 Thread (VGMusic Community Version!)

Postby Merit Celaire » Mon Jun 04, 2012 4:20 pm

All right, VGMusic community, it's that time again -- the week has arrived -- which is obviously E3 2012!

As we all should know, all eyes will be on what Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft have to offer in terms of consoles and the soon to be announced games for them (and ESPECIALLY to answer the question on what this so-called "Wii U" is made of and if it will be worth keeping track of when the show is over). But this thread is also for us to unite and declare which games from other publishers/developers that we're interested in and will be keeping track of as well.

So, without futher ado, let the discussion commence. I'll post my list later once I check out the major presentations today (6/4) and tomorrow (6/5). Take care, all!

One thing I did see on a news site that surprised me... apparently the Wii U Classic Controller looks like an Xbox 360 S controller, but with the right control stick and A/B/X/Y buttons switched.

I'm also waiting to see if Capcom redeems itself in any way, or if their company remains dead to me. Seriously, refusing to translate the second Miles Edgeworth game, which essentially means that the likelyhood that we see any more Ace Detective games is about 5% (other than Ace Attorney vs. Professor Layton, which is being released by Level 5 not Capcom), then Capcom cancelling two Mega Man games...

My only hope at this stage -- one more flagship first party Wii game, one more, like a Yoshi game or F-Zero or something would be cool. I'm being optimistic but a man can dream. I expect it'll mostly be Wii U and 3DS developments. The console crud doesn't interest me too much, I'm mainly interested in seeing the games.

I still will never forgive them for canceling that GBA game "Mega Man Anniversary Collection". I was so very curious to see how they'd approach that (as well as my getting used to how the Game Boy Mega Man games were played).

On a different note, someone confirm this for me -- but both Microsoft and Sony had their press conferences last night... and there wasn't anything to hold the reporter's interests over on those cases?

Also, in other news -- in the case of the Nintendo side of things -- it's really official since yesterday -- the current Wii console is now being "phased out" -- the folks at Nintendo Japan have now concentrated their focus on the upcoming Wii U system.

So now, technically, the only two active systems focus-wise from Nintendo's end are the Wii U and the 3DS.

E3 was pretty disappointing this year, not a whole lot I was interested in from any of the conferences. One thing that disturbed me a little bit, however, was the emphasis put on violence in many of the conferences. I'm not trying to sound like I'm "behind the times" or anything, but I felt like a lot of emphasis was put on mindless, gratuitous violence this year. Face stabbing, slit throats, bullets flying through the heads of characters in slow motion, it was just too much this year. I have no problem with violence in video games, but not when developers are trying to fetish-ize it. But I guess what disturbed me most was the cheers and hollers that came from the audience afterwards. Look at The Last of Us play-through in Sony's conference. At the end, the main character shoots a character point blank in the head with his young daughter watching behind him and then there's a roar from the audience. I dunno, it just left me feeling a little disgusted. That's my take, and I just think it's sad that a lot of the industry believes that violence is the best way to sell video games when I think there are a number of creative things developers can do to make a fun experience.

So, that's how I felt about E3. A couple of good titles, but overall, a boring year if not a bit offensive IMO.

I've felt this for a long time. Whenever developers spend resources making violence more potent and more gruesome, it seems something is wrong. Why do we need more visible blood and gore? Why do we need to see each bloody little entrail? It's not like it instills a healthy fear or respect in people. It's like spending hours programming a system for boob physics. A little sensual? At the same time, I can understand comedic violence, but that's not really the issue here.
