Dear Anubis, I would like to submit a theme idea for the Challenge Section.

An office building is hijacked by a band of gangsters. Fortunately, among the office workers is a skilled computer system administrator, Nathan Lineback, who has a special violin which shoots laser beams when it is played. However, Nathan has learned improper fingering technique so he can only play pentatonic scales very quickly.
Nathan fights the gangsters using the violin.

I'll keep the Theme you've submited dust Hill resident, but for other people, please give me your ideas through PM, to keep anonnymity.

Right now I got 2 themes, so 7 themes left before we go to the max.

Not that anyone would really care, but since I did submit samples I think I should announce this:
Sadly I didn't manage to compose anything worthy of submission in time before my new semester starts.
So I won't be submitting anything.

Can't wait to hear the results from everyone though! =D
Anubis, will I be able to judge even if I don't submit a song?

Yes you will. Since you have submitted some samples, you participate at least in one part so yes you will be able to judge and vote.

Damn ButzaW that sucks :( not even something short?

I'm having trouble myself. Basically because I hate working with audio, it's always a huge headache. There's enough latency so that I can't successfully record stuff in live without a lot of tweaking, I always have mixing/clipping issues, and I always have issues with percussion due to lack of per-note session-based dynamic panning... then there's this whole issue I have where I've only got one fader per channel, when I really need two (one for dynamics, one for mixing), which I have to get around by loading 'Gain-er' plugins on every channel so that I can use the TRACK MIXERS for dynamics. It always feels like I'm fighting against the software when I have to write non-MIDI things, though I accept I'm fairly naive on the subject (still, after five years of working with audio and almost a decade of writing music.) For what it's worth I've got three songs started and I hope to complete all of them, but it's more painful than it should be... it's very frustrating.

You sure your program doesn't allow you to adjust the volume of the sound itself, and then the mixer track after that? If it is not letting you do so, then it may be the sampler you are using (although I still find it strange because FL simply has a volume knob for every last thing that creates sound, and then you send those sounds to a track, which has it's own volume knob, and I always thought this was normal and that every basic or more than basic audio program out there did). I can't imagine a program that would be like that, it would drive me crazy. Anyway, yeah the idea of the contest is for things to be far from standard and I personally wouldn't have any fun if it were simple and easy, so I'm sure you are not the only one who is having trouble, I think we all are, and it's how we cope with it that determines how well things come out. It's one of the best parts of this contest. Seeing how others coped with the difficulty.

Anyway, Dave, I think it's time you updated your software, or find out if there's more to it that meets the eye.

Edit: also, the order of how things works for when I make audio is, the mixer tracks are for volume adjusting (mixing), and the sounds themselves are used for dynamics if you adjust those volumes, If you do it in reverse it doesn't work and will seem limited. Also, you send dynamics (like distortion, vocoder, reverb...) to the mixer tracks, and then they each have their own adjustments (including amount of applied effect). (sorry if I'm stating the obvious, but I'm still confused as to how you can't do what seems like a basic function to me).

Well note velocities are another thing altogether, I have no issue with those, that's fine, but those are obviously no good when you want sustained notes with crescendos/diminuendos, which is where a volume control comes in. I certainly can't see a dedicated volume control on each sampler instance (there really should be one, so either I'm being really stupid* or...) I will have another look because it seems crazy that there isn't both an internal volume on the EXS24 for dynamics as well as the mixer controls for adjustments at mix level.

As for sending channels down buses, I've had a hell of a time with that. I toiled with it for ages a while back when I was trying to send four or so tracks all to one delay unit on a bus channel (so that I wouldn't have to load up the same VST effect four times with the same settings), and I was speaking to MaliceX about it at the time with his guidance. I never did figure out the problem, so I gave up and did it the stupid aforementioned way, with four separate delay units - redundant, time consuming, processor-intensive. It was something to do with not being able to mute the original channels without also muting the bus channel, I think. Something like that. But it was a problem anyway. So that's another thing I really need to sit and work out.

The challenge of the contest isn't an issue, it's the additional undesirable challenges that get thrown up by software that bug me, and this is the reason I am always stuck doing midi, and have been so slow moving forward. It's kinda sad that I feel more comfortable in Photoshop than I do with audio in Logic. Which is shame, because as a General MIDI sequencer, it's insanely badass.

*EDIT: found EXS24 volume control, conclusion: I was being really, really, ultimatekoopa-esque stupid.

Just wondering, is there an exact date for the song to be submitted by? I want to make sure I have enough time.

For now, I'm trying to get as many as maximum ideas to start the challenge Section. The Idea Submission time will end friday night.

As for the Exact date, I have non for now, but as Blitz told, this contest will probably last a month + bit more days.

See ya!

Yes you can sign up to join the tournament :) , but you'll not be able to post sample(s). This was done 2 weeks ago, sorry :? .
