CMC: Conceptual Music Competition
Image

This competition is based on the rules of the classic TOMC (Thematic Original Music Competition).

The CMC (Conceptual Music Competition) is designed so that each participant enters a piece of music based on a set theme. The participants take the theme and interpret it as they will to come up with something that fits. Any style can work, as long as it portrays a sense of what the theme is.

Feel free to be imaginative!

Each successive theme will be chosen by the winner of the previous competition. For example, say the theme of the last competition, CMC 36, was "Iceberg" and the winner, Oliver, submitted a piece that knocked the socks off of everyone, so he won. Oliver then gets to decide the theme for CMC 37.

This competition is open to registered members of the forums of
OverClocked ReMix, VGMix, VGMusic, Gaming World, Young Composers, and GameDev.

Results!:

There are 4 entries for this round...

Brandon Strader - "Tell-Tale Secrets"

"This song is about the wife who gets an abortion but does not tell her husband. She sweeps it under the rug and tries to hide it from him, but is haunted by the mutilated, beating, tell-tale heart of the murdered baby she is hiding under the rug. The concept for this song was originally going to be expressed through vocals, but it was decided against as it was too much fun to listen to without them."

Jeff Rettew - "Creepies"

"Imagine vacuuming the house, television playing in the background. They are here. They are back and you start to hear them coming from all around..."

Kirill Podzorov - "Under the Rug"

"It's back. And this time it's brought along a few friends."

Divine Wrath - "Below the Rug"

"The story of a man's journey through the strange world under his rug."

Voting Rules!:
Voters will be allowed to pick one first place (3 points) and any number of honorary mentions (1 point). Only one set of votes from any one voter will be accepted and a person cannot vote for any one piece more than once. Corrections to votes, from the original voter only, will be accepted, but corrections will void the previous votes. Basically, a voter can vote and correct the vote, but only the final form of that vote will be counted. Send all votes to Abadoss by PM or e-mail. Please include any and all constructive critiques (not to be confused with bashing) about them with your votes as well, so that there's always a sense of growth in the artform. If you wish to remain anonymous, just state so in your PM. Thanks.
To be eligible to vote, you must be a registered member of at least one of the participating forums, prior to the beginning of the voting period. In your PM or e-mail, please indicate which forum you are a member of and your username.
The voting period will last from the moment the entries are posted in the thread to the Saturday of that week. The voting period for this round ends April 3, so be sure to spend some time really listening to the pieces.
Any participant in the competition can vote, but not for their own pieces. However, in an effort to encourage voting among participants, any participant who votes will have 2 points added to his/her voting score (unless the participant chooses to be anonymous).

Official Rules!:
  1. Each piece must be originally composed for this competition. Arrangements and remixes will not be accepted. (Pieces composed by the participant prior to the competition will not be accepted.)
  2. Each piece must be 2:00 or longer and match the competition theme.
  3. Only one entry per person. Collaborations will be allowed, but each collaborator may not submit any other pieces. (This also means that a person cannot collaborate on two or more different pieces at the same time.)
  4. A link to the entry piece must be e-mailed (Abadoss@yahoo.com) or PMed to Abadoss prior to the deadline set for each competition. DO NOT POST THE LINK IN THE THREAD!
  5. Important: Each file must be labeled accordingly: Composer_Name_-_Composition_Title_CMC#.mp3
(For example, if Rachel Neumann submits a piece called "A Winning Defeat" to CMC 39, then her filename would be: Rachel_Neumann_-_A_Winning_Defeat_CMC39.mp3)
  6. MP3 file format is required. Know that even OGG will need to be converted into MP3. (If someone is unable to do so themselves, Abadoss would be willing and able to do it for them.)
  7. Entries should be accompanied by a description and/or story to help listeners understand what the piece is about. (Not required, though.)
  8. All entries must be submitted by Saturday, March 27, 2010 at 11:59 PM - PST, GMT-8.

You can find the competition threads for each forum listed below:

Good luck and have fun! :D

Hey, are you guys still interested in this? We're still here. The deadline's in a little under two weeks, so be working on your pieces. I'd like to see more than a couple entries this time around. Thanks.

Brah I'm so into this I'm logging into the website for the first time in 4 years just to post this

so yeah it's pretty much my first competition I'm entering ever, is there a limit to how long the pieces can be? mine's about 6 mins so far though I doubt it's gonna be any longer, is that alright?
and I remember the old competitions were mostly MIDI, we can submit full-on orchestral mp3's for this right?

Length is not an issue unless it's under 2:00. Also, MP3 please. Looking forward to hearing it. :D

Tonight's the night! All entries must be turned in by 11:59 PM (Pacific Standard Time, GMT-8) to be counted in the voting stage. Remember to either PM or e-mail a link to where the piece can be downloaded (or attach the file to an e-mail) and include a description of the piece in the message body.

I love how different all the songs are for this comp, that's the great thing about having such a simple description for us to go off.
Just wish there were more people interested in this stuff, there's gotta be a way to get a bunch of people involved in these competitions it's not like there's a shortage of composers out there or anything.

BTW when are the vote results gonna be posted?

I'd say at least one day after the voting period ends.
I can attempt to create replicas of Video Game MIDIs! All I need is either a sound file or a real live sound file from video games with the ability to mute channels (unless otherwise specified)!
