Not really.

What determines whether a song is fitting to the theme of an owl? What determines whether a song is fitting to the theme of Halloween? What determines whether a song is fitting to an "element" such as fire, water, earth or vegetal? What determines whether a song is fitting to any sort of picture?

Halloween = Dark, Ghostly, Scary, Misechevious, Enchanted.
Owls = Wisdom, Quietude, Flight, Forest, Library.

You see, each theme has a set of moods behind it. You might ask, what makes a song sound "scary", for example? Chords. Harmonies. Whether we can consciously identify them or not, different combinations of notes mean different things to different people, in an almost universal way. It's just the way humans react to sounds. The problem I had with this contest is that I can't figure out what those underlying themes are. But, what Anthony Morgan said helped me out on that one a little.

It simply has to *feel* like an anime intro theme.

That's actually exactly what I needed. We don't really have an established list of what makes an anime theme an anime theme. There are certain characteristics that are shared between most themes, and those are what we need to try to embrace. Write a story, a synopsis of plot, with one short song. Now I'm getting excited, I might take part actually. I have story that might work perfectly. I must ask one thing though, what defines anime? Does that mean any general animated series, or does it have an actual tie in to Japanese roots?

I laughed so richly. Dave Harris the hipster, writing pony music before writing pony music was cool.

The scary thing is that I recognize half of those ponies as earlier incarnations of modern ones. I could probably place a name to most.

For me and most of the peeps I know around here anime=japanese animation ...anything else=cartoon.

I suggest we use these definitions:

wiktionary wrote:anime
1. (uncountable) An artistic style heavily used in, and associated with, Japanese animation, and that has also been adopted by a comparatively low number of animated works from other countries.
2. (countable) An animated work originated in Japan, regardless of the artistic style.

The only difference it makes for the contest is, if you plan on drawing inspiration from an existing anime series, this series either has to be Japanese, or stylistically associated with Japanese animation.
If you plan on imagining your own series, I suppose it makes little to no difference.

A little off-the-road question:

Are you going to list the number of entries people submitted?

It's just that I like to play the guessing game myself, and showing how many entries people submitted makes it a bit too easy.

I won't, to preserve anonymity and for the fun of guessing, as you said.

Things are going pretty smooth here. I'm actually quite happy with what I'm working on this time. It just needs to be finished. :P

I might sit on it until the last moment, but I'll definitely have something ready before the deadline.

I'm not doing very well. I don't think I'll be able to write something. You can take me out.

My entry is finished. It will be in before the deadline. I'm just keeping it right here in case I want to make some small changes.

I'll try to see if I can get another one done.

The topic title says June so people may be waiting until the end of June to submit.

Ah well, at vgmusic.com we have a long tradition of extending deadlines.

Today is the deadline day for submissions.

Thank you KungFuFurby & Xenu for your entries!

I wasn't able to provide anything in time myself. Sorry for that.

Obviously I cannot consider the contest done now.
I'd like you all to tell me what you think I should do, whether or not you are in favor of a deadline extension (and if so to what length), whether or not you have been working on something.

Thanks!

Nope, I haven't been working on anything for this contest. I've been working on a few things, but no music for this. It doesn't help that my brother trashed my main computer, so I rarely get the chance to compose. Soon I shall get a laptop though, and can compose on my own time whenever I please, and wherever~
I sometimes make belief and pretend I can compose
