Would like critique on my song please

Postby ilg7853 » Thu Jun 14, 2012 4:44 am

This is my 6th attempt at a song.
I think it's my best, but I'm not sure what genre it fits into. Created with a soundfont from Castlevania Order of Ecclesia. I've been inspired by music from games like Ys, Castlevania and Final Fantasy.

Now this isn't finished, probably because I've heard it so many times that I'm sick of it. :) Not to say I hate it, but I've ran out of ideas. The main reason I haven't been able to fully complete a song, advice?
Any comments are greatly appreciated.

This is pretty good for your 6th attempt!

Hi, ilg. I definitely recognised the Castlevania influence straight away. You have something good going here, although it still needs to be refined. There is some dissonance (disharmonised sound) at parts that does not feel deliberate, such as at 0:49. It could be the timbre of the samples causing this, though. As for new ideas, might I suggest a refrain that drops out the percussion and hard bass? Such a rest between more rhythmic segments can help with diversity of sound and cutting the monotony. Keep up the good work.

Awesome, thanks for the responses guys. Exactly what I was looking for.

Peach, that spot at 0:49 was what I was going for, but maybe it's just my ears. The samples used aren't perfect, but I also haven't studied music before so I could be wrong. Thanks very much for the advice :D

I like this, the soundfount is nice and fits this style pretty well and I can here the influences. The piece flows quite well too, but one thing that could make this tune a little more catchy was a more defined melody around 0:13 and 0:30, although the parts at 0:30 fit nicely, it could do with a few harmonies and what not to give it a bigger wow factor. Great work though!

Thanks very much. The hardest thing I find about making a song is coming up with a melody, I kind of got lucky with this one.
I have a midi keyboard, would memorizing all the chords help with making melodies? I've opened up a bunch of castlevania songs into FL studio to look at how Michiru Yamane structures her song and that's how I managed to get this song going. I've read that she just plays on her piano until she has something she likes and then she fixes the notes. With this song, I just placed the notes in the piano roll where I thought it'd sound best.

The soundfont, along with MIDIs to study, was ripped directly from the rom with VGMTrans if anyone's wondering.

I'd like to post my next one that I made. I've taken advice from you guys

I tried for a part without percussion to cut monotony as Peach said, and I tried for more harmony with the lead as Kc1336 said.
In my opinion, the strings sound really rough. I need to use some other samples I think. Also, I really didn't expect it to be as short as it is. For now, I guess I'll focus on how to make a song work (for the most part) rather than trying something longer. This was probably 2 hours of work, and listening to it again on soundcloud, it seems I have a few notes that could be fixed.
