I've heard Mario say "An unholy potato" in Superstar Saga.

...or at least a series of incoherent mumbles that sound like "an unholy potato"

Some of the gibberish I heard in Partners in Time almost sounded like Italian food. I remember distinctly hearing "A-pizza-a-poodle-a-pasta-a-noodle" once. Don't ask why I heard poodle... ok you can ask but I have no clue what the answer is.

I was about 10 when Mario Teaches Typing came out, and I remember playing it. Charles Martinet did indeed do the voice in Mario Teaches Typing, though there is a catch. There were two versions of MTT: the floppy disc version for DOS and the CD version for Mac/Windows. He did not do the voices in the DOS version, but I never actually played that one. The CD-ROM version is much better; the other one uses the system speaker for its music, and if you were around long enough to remember games that did that, you're either highly nostalgic about it or you thank $DEITY_NAME that we moved past that era in computer game music... maybe a little of each. If you weren't around long enough to remember those times, then I guess the nostalgia part is off the table.

Right... So, I guess it is safe for me to say that from my experience with Mario games, I have heard Mario speak very little.

What's amazing about it is that the makers actually got Charles, the voice for Mario to do it.

I think he talks a few things when he's idoling.
Ex.
"Hey, have you seen Luigi?"
"Say I'm Hungry, you got any food?"
"I'm going to sing for you. 'When the moon hits your eyes, like a big pizza pie,(as so on)"
"Say you have a nice computer. Can I have it?"

It is to my understanding that Mario isn't mute; however, he does say many words not in sentence form. I say that, looking at my experiences with Mario games, he seems to say nothing but interjections. I understand that Tails230's evidence I quoted above may indeed be fact, but I wasn't alive when Mario Teaches Typing came out, so I'll never know whether this info was correct or not.

I've never even heard of the game till about 3 months ago when I saw a Youtube Poop of it.

But I think it would be ok if Mario does talk. Maybe not part of the storyline, maybe just like introducing himself or instructions.
But I guess he's already introducing himself with the Mario 64's famous Quote. 'It's-a Me, Mario!'
But the instructions will be nice for Mario to explain. (Just as long as he doesn't tell the player to 'check out the Enclosed Instruction Book!')

"Press-a start!"

Ah, Mario Teaches Typing was good times. I don't know if I actually beat it or not. My typing at the time was pretty sub-par, but I couldn't have been older than seven when we got it. I do attribute my insane typing speed to it though (as well as Mavis Beacon). Other than that, I don't know if I would accept any other Mario game with that amount of voice-acting. It was completely in place for him to talk to the player there, since he gave instructions or made small talk to entertain the player (since the character was controlling his sprite, but the huge head above the sprite was the one actually doing the talking). Unless all subsequent Mario games were created with his giant floating head at the top of the screen, I don't see how talking would really fit in.

It could even be just thinking. Like on Conker's Bad Fur Day. He thinks to himself about the instructions

Example:
Conker Thinking:Hold down Z and I could crouch, now what was it? Oh yea, press A to jump extra high, then A again to do that... funny helicoptery-tail-thing, now that makes me hover.

That'd work even better if Mario was inebriated at the time. Heck, he does eat all those blasted mushrooms. Honestly, isn't it somewhat surprising that he doesn't already have a slur...

Hmmmm...:| This is quite puzzling. I've heard so many different things at once. It's so hard to take it all in. :( First, I hear that Mario does speak in complete sentences. Second, I hear that he speaks incoherently. Now, I've come to the conclusion that whether Mario speaks or not varies on the game.

Psst. It's all a myth. In reality, what you really think you hear Mario saying is really all just in your head. See now? ^_^ Oh? What's that? The clown with the red nose that lives next door fed dog food through the waste disposal to make popsicles for the kids again? That's nice. Or was that just that strange voice again. Hmm. Meh, whatever. Looks like it's time to take the penguin for a walk again...
