FL Studios or Pro Tools for composing?

Postby StereoForBrains » Wed Dec 16, 2009 2:44 am

Subject title says it all. I just got used to composing on piano roll on FL studios, and now I'm told Pro Tools is better for composing AND that it doesn't use piano roll. Before I make another change, I figured I'd ask. Which do you folks prefer?

Also, which has better instrument packs?

I use FL Studios because I personally prefer the piano roll environment, as opposed to say, the sheet music composers. I don't really know about Pro Tools. But that's just me. I've composed plenty of songs in it just fine. However, if your comfortable with the piano roll and you enjoy it, I'd say stick with it and FL. A composer is better off working in an interface he/she is more comfortable and familiar with than one he/she is not.

As far as instruments are concerned, I don't really use the instruments that come with FL, rather I use soundfonts, samples, and dsl banks ripped from DS games. However, it's not that I don't like some of the instruments in the pack; it's just my style and preference are more...orchestral, as opposed to the extremely synthy sound that most of those instruments have. Again, it's purely a matter of preference.

I'm using FL Studio 8, and it has served me well. I have tried Pro Tools, but haven't liked it very much. Probably because I was so used to the Piano Roll. Like the person above me, I also use soundfonts and VSTi's. Right now, I'm using Edirol Orchestra. Recommended.

I used FL Studio to make MIDIs.

But I don't know how to change a tempo track when the song's playing!

But I'm working on the song, "Cavi Cape" on Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story.

The tempo was 128, and I should make it down to 85.
First song: Talespin- Ending Part 1
Latest Song: Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time/Darkness- Mt. Horn

# of MIDIs on New Files: 113
# of MIDIs in the Archive: 57
# of MIDIs removed: 1
Total of MIDIs: 170
