DEADLINE EXTENDED TO 3/31/11

Composers and game music enthusiasts alike, welcome to Contest de la Rocco #7: The Crucial Encounter!

The premise of the contest is Final Battle Themes, and I have laid out three hypothetical game scenarios that will be the subject of the contest. Here are some important points to consider if you are thinking of entering:

  • Entries should be composed with a specific game scenario in mind
  • Entries must loop once, have a transition to a "Final Form" section, and loop again
  • General MIDI and Audio entries (160+kbs MP3) will be accepted
  • Mixing quality and/or MIDI implementation is important
  • Please read all of the information on the site to avoid any misunderstandings

Happy composing, and good luck!
-Rocco

----------------------------------------

EDIT: I've been contacted by a couple of people needing more clarification about the two looping sections of music, and how the minimum length of 2:00 fits in. So here's an explanation:

(Theme1 + Loop1) + Transition + (Theme2 + Loop2) Should not exceed 10:00 (and the loops don't have to be complete playthroughs. I just want you to demonstrate how the piece would loop in-game for both sections)

Theme1 (no loop) + Transition + Theme2 (no loop) should be no less than 2:00 long. An easier way to say this would be that both sections plus the transition must be no less than 2:00 long before either section is looped. It's just to ensure there are no embarrassingly short entries. I don't think it will even come up.

As for how MUCH of the sections must loop, all that will be judged is how effectively the music finds its way back to the beginning. Once you have demonstrated the loop, you may immediately do whatever you have to do to either transition to the Final Form section, or fade out at the end (or however you plan to end it). Here's an example of the structure of an entry that doesn't play the whole way through both loops:

Section 1 is playing now, lalalala
(loop)
Section 1 is. . .
TRANSITION
Section 2 is playing now, doo de doo de doo
(loop)
Section 2 is. . .
(fade out)

Looks pretty solid, I might enter it.

In this case, I'd be very happy to compose something... I wonder what it is...
My game music works:
Scribble Star by Winzenheimer and the Stencyl Team
Nine Pixel Game by KungFuFurby (my own creation! ^_^)
Arkanaut by Manuel/Satelite Play
Blackheist by Manuel/Satelite Play

And some others that haven't been released yet.

Nice, nice. Very nice.
I really want to give this a go, but am not sure if I'll have the time to go do it full out.
Oh, and are teamcomps valid for this one as well? That might be fun to try again.

Contest Page wrote:. . . Teamcomps count as one entry from any composers involved.

So yes, they will be valid.

I'll be prepared to start CdlR7 as early as a week from now, just in case dust hill resident doesn't end up running a Monthly MIDI Contest for February. The deadline will be flexible enough that if you need more time, and are actively working on an entry, I would rather have another entry than end on time. ;)

i'm not sure he'll want to right now anyway, what with the facebook thing..

also whoa OLD CONTESTS. glad to see those available again. i forgotten that i had entered #2 (lol "Blinz Lunar") and #4 (terribad song)! i also made songs that i didn't submit/finish for #1 and #3, which is probably a good thing.. haha. and that I've judged so many past contests too... augh.

i miss Justus. holyshit. he's on facebook tho. maybe we should mass-add him. haha
anyway, tangents aside... i'll probably enter.

"Blinz Lunar" is a fresh typo, Haha! And I listed "The Last Legacy" twice on the Games page. Things like that happen when you make a website in a weekend. XD (will fix later)

After looking at the three games from CdlR 5, I have an interesting temptation on what to compose... I will note that I have no intentions on composing MIDIs.

Oh, and 320 kbps MP3? That's two and a half times the size that I usually get out of converting my WAVs to MP3s out of Schism Tracker... that's the maximum quality setting on iTunes when converting to MP3.
My game music works:
Scribble Star by Winzenheimer and the Stencyl Team
Nine Pixel Game by KungFuFurby (my own creation! ^_^)
Arkanaut by Manuel/Satelite Play
Blackheist by Manuel/Satelite Play

And some others that haven't been released yet.

KFF: I have deliberately withheld enough information about the contest, that it would be unwise to begin work quite yet (or even get too many ideas quite yet). And I only specify 320kbs because it's the highest bitrate available on mp3s. That rule is up for negotiation; It's only there to avoid composers accidentally handicapping themselves by using low-quality compression.
