Square Enix Music interview with Soyo Oka

Postby Blitz Lunar » Thu Mar 31, 2011 11:02 am

Around August last year, SEMO webmaster Chris Greening contacted me with the idea of interviewing ex-Nintendo composer Soyo Oka, wondering if I'd like to propose some questions for her. Naturally, I jumped on this without hesitation and scrambled together some questions that I thought would be interesting to ask. Skip ahead a number of months and I'm delighted to say that the interview is finally out!

I thought some people here would find this interesting. It certainly does clear up a lot of things, particularly regarding Pilotwings and Super Mario Kart :)

Wow, Blitz, you did that interview? Awesome. Glad the Pilotwings and Mario Kart is clear now.

Kinda! Many of the questions are mine (mainly ones about specific projects), but I didn't conduct the whole thing. Chris and the various coordinators/translators did the lion's share of the work. Yeah, seeing those two games cleared up once-and-for-all was a relief. It's been known for a while before now that only she composed for the two games (via her JCAA profile, Nintendo Super Famicom Game Music album, Rocketbaby interview), but this is the first time it's been written in plain English, so that hopefully people will finally get the hint :D It was also nice to learn more about 3D Hot Rally, and the NES Sim City information is just tantalizing!

Since it wasn't addressed in the interview, did she actually work on Wario's Woods?

That's a good point... I don't know exactly what her involvement was with that, I didn't think to ask :< she's credited for the NES version along with Amayake though, but going with her line from JCAA which translates something like "for every game I worked on, I did all the music, except 3D Hot Rally", I would assume she did the music for it.
