Random Song Button version 1.2.0

Postby Yaginuma » Thu Aug 20, 2009 7:46 pm

The Random Song page now auto refreshes after each song in order to provide an infinite playlist! Special thanks to the PerlMonks for code to calculate the midi play length (not a trivial task)! A meta refresh tag is calculated upon each page load based on the midi play length plus two extra seconds to allow for page and song load times.

Wh-what devilry is this!? The fourth song it played for me is the town song from Breath of Fire III. The game I've plugged 48 hours into recently? BREATH OF FIRE III! How could this thing know what I'm doing? Can we be sure this isn't some sort of advanced spyware technology, Yaginuma, that will allow for Google to have more "personalized" advertisements?

And on a side note, four in Japan sounds like the word for death. WHICH IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND UNLUCKY. All this sounds like a conspiracy theory might be in the works.

In all seriousity, I love it. This thing is awesome.

Edit: Although, why does the volume seem to turn down at random on occasion? Is that something I'm doing or...?

Edit 2: Okay then, I figured it out. As a warning to anyone using this thing, you're going to want to keep it in a separate window rather than a separate tab. I use the arrow keys mostly to scroll around, so when you're using them it sometimes will turn the volume up and down on you (or skip ahead, fall backwards in the song if you're using left and right). Other than that, seriously, I love this thing. I was getting sick of all my songs in my library, but I can't just add new songs to it (they have to be really awesome for me to listen to for hours on end, but this way I get to hear all of these things just once or so and I don't get sick of them).

Edit the Third: Each time it refreshes the page for the next song, it switches from whatever window you're in to its window. Is there a way to stop this?

So far I've tested the page on:

Operating System, Browser, Media Player (embedded / external window):

Windows XP Professional SP3, Firefox 3.5, Windows Media Player (external)
Windows XP Home SP3, Firefox 3.5, Quicktime (embedded)
Ubuntu 9.04, Firefox 3.0, Movie Player (external)

I also tested Internet Explorer a little, but I forget offhand which machine I did it on.

I don't seem to be having the problems/issues you mentioned (web browser never forces itself to the foreground upon refresh). And the volume / arrow keys problem sounds like a media player specific thing.

Let me know what you're using. Plus, I'm interested to know from other people what setups also work / don't work. I hope to add a customization feature in a future version to turn refresh on/off, as well as select specific game systems.

I'm using Firefox. I have no idea what version. Since you tested it on all those things and didn't have a problem, I assume the issue is on my hand. I'll start checking my settings, see what needs to be turned off.
