Commenting Feature Now Live on All Music Pages

Postby Yaginuma » Thu Nov 22, 2012 11:47 pm

The commenting feature is now live on all music archive pages (not just the new-files)! Looking forward to seeing all the discussions about new and old files alike. If you notice any other bugs, please let us know (the page generation script was rewritten from Perl to Python and it may be missing a few things... like a few ZIP files we have listed in the past). Each game system is now consolidated into an A-Z page since modern computers can list even the largest listings without any problems.

Bias against older computers. :(

Also, still needs an account system or something so authors can actually *know* comments have been made on their MIDIs, only now it's even harder to keep track of the comments without one.

Regarding the pages being too long for old computers: Still pondering making separate pages for each game, but will probably need to run a poll before I make a change that big.

As for authors/sequencers being able to track comments, it might be handy to have a page for each sequencer listing all of his/her songs across all game systems. Will look into that soon.

BTW, I just noticed that the number of MIDIs that have been counted in the archive looks like it has been dropped! I hope this won't be because of it being in its beta stages...

It's normal that the comment page freezes my computer for a minute or two? And no, it's not an old computer, it's actually from 2011.

Masterlink: No, I get it too. The freezing is because it takes a minute to load those junky ad links onto the information page.

Yaginuma: Now that VGMusic has had this system for a while, I must say that I really don't like it. Disqus is nice on the right kind of site, but it's really something that belongs on a news website, not here. Not only does it briefly freeze the information pages, as was mentioned, but it has made a godawful mess in the archive. Take a look and you'll find games of the same title under 2, sometimes 3, headings. Sorry, man. I know you meant well when you installed this system, but something had to be said :(

luigi127: What do you mean? Isn't it saying "Comments" to the right of each MIDI for you?

The game system pages take a long time to load and freeze my browser while doing so.
I will sequence requests for $.

Please don't make double posts, the "edit" thing is on this forum.

When the comment pages were first added, I visited a comments page in Internet Explorer 8 and got a message that my browser wasn't supported. (It shows existing comments in a plain format, but doesn't have a way to add a comment.)

Recently I noticed Disqus has revised the error message to the following:

This page is forcing your browser to use legacy mode, which is not compatible with Disqus. Please see our troubleshooting guide to get more information about this error.

Yaginuma: According to the troubleshooting page linked in the error message, it looks like comment posting should work in Internet Explorer 8 if you add an appropriate DOCTYPE.

Bavi_H is right. There's actually a couple more problems with the page. There is no <title> tag in the <head> tag and a character encoding isn't specified.
