Sixteen Candles for VGMusic.com!

Postby Yaginuma » Wed Dec 19, 2012 9:16 pm

Today is VGMusic.com's 16th birthday! Upcoming this year, we hope to add sequencer pages so all songs from a specific sequencer can be viewed (including any pending in the "New Files" section). Your financial support would be appreciated to help us end this calendar year back in the black. As of the end of November, we are $300 in the red. Since our Google Adsense revenue no longer covers our monthly costs, we are investigating removing all ads (we don't blame you for using Adblock Plus) and instead promote links to game soundtracks at online music stores as future revenue. Thanks again for another year of music, and keep those midis and comments coming!

About time we had sequencer-specific pages, yeah. =D

Though on another note, New Files section has long since passed the 4000-MIDI mark and still going. When that thing will ever be cleared out is anyone's guess. =S

I'm not even sure if the site can be updated atm, due to the changes made recently, it may mess something up, I'm not sure how it works... I'm guessing whatever comments are made on songs in the new-files will be lost/a new comment thread will be made when a file is put in the archive. I've said it before, but IMO, the new-files is too big a job for two~three or so update staff to realistically tackle and stay on top of, and I think moving to a system that involves users in the community far more would be much better (as it isn't just lack of staff, but also lack of knowledge about all game music.) I'll get around to some updates, eventually, presuming I can still proceed and not mess anything up... the new-files has been reduced from 4k to effectively zero before, though it does take a long time.

Sequencer pages and all of that needs an account system, probably a database... it's been planned and planned for so long, heaven knows if it'll ever happen :)

I've been coming to this site for so long, I can't not donate a little something-something, especially now that I have a jeorb.

Merry Christmas and here's to more years.

Notice how the comment pages have a URL based on a hash of the file (and not based on the MIDI file name or directory). The recent files added to the archive still have the comments made before they were added:

http://www.vgmusic.com/file/b3c943c5c9e ... 3337f.html
http://www.vgmusic.com/file/1f7a4931c91 ... 087e2.html
http://www.vgmusic.com/file/9b30a7107fd ... 90a3f.html

But I guess you'll have check with Mike Newman / Yaginuma to confirm if there's anything special needed to preserve the comments when you add files to the archive.

Right, so hopefully it'll be okay then, since I imagine Mike used the staff tools. I figured I should err on the side of caution (as it wouldn't be the first time an update really screwed things up :).)

Sequencer pages? Okay, this sounds really interesting.

Now if I could only find motiviation to do more MIDI sequencing work. *lol* It's been an extremely long while since I've done MIDI contributions around here.

Some quick feedback: comments will not be lost when files move from new-files to main archive because the comment pages are based on the md5sum of each file (I thought ahead on that).

Site archive updates are still done in the same fashion as before. I didn't change that part of the site. So staff members can still do updates the same way as before.

As of today (Dec 25, 2012), our deficit has been substantially reduced due to the generosity of several donors. We are now negative $92.62 (much better than before).

Update for Wed Dec 26, 2012: New balance is negative 57 dollars. Currently, I contribute out of my own pocket any site costs that aren't met by donations or ad revenue. To be fair, I consider the business taxes I pay on the site my fair contribution. :D

I unfortunately will not be able to help out THIS year as I kinda overspent due to xmas(my own fault for not actually keeping track of my account balance.) But I'll be able to at least contribute for next year in a few weeks
